Is Viewfinder Worth It?

Critics score it in the low-to-mid 80s on Metacritic. Players on Steam are warmer. The usual complaint is that it is short on purpose.

IsThereAnyDeal reports 88 percent recommended across 95 OpenCritic reviews; that is a recommendation rate, not an 88/100 review score. Steam’s English reviews were 92 percent of 6,441 when the store page was read, with 96 percent of 224 recent reviews. The all-language figure on that aggregator was 94 percent of 12,249. Individual scores cited by Wikipedia include GamesRadar 5/5, GameSpot 9/10, PC Gamer 87, IGN 8/10, Game Informer 8.25, Push Square 7/10, and The Guardian 4/5. Awards are two BAFTA 2024 wins, British Game and New Intellectual Property, plus a Japan Game Awards 2024 Game Designers Award. Nominations at The Game Awards, GDC, and the Golden Joystick Awards are nominations, not wins. I will not write “Game of the Year”.

What the reviews agree on: the photo mechanic and the art direction carry the game, and it does not pad the runtime. What they complain about: some players find the early puzzles easy, Chapters 4 and 5 ramp up, and the Switch version runs at 30 frames with dips when many photos are linked. Who I would point at a purchase: people who liked a single spatial toy in Portal, Superliminal, The Witness, or Maquette, and who want roughly four to six hours. Who I would warn: anyone who needs 60 frames on Switch, or a disc on a shelf. No physical edition turned up. Price context on 31 Oct 2026 was $24.99 list and $7.49 on Steam until 9 Nov 2026. It was a PlayStation Plus monthly game in September 2025, which is not the same as a permanent catalog listing. The comparison with Superliminal is on games like Viewfinder.
