Viewfinder Save File Location
On Windows the saves are .sav and .bak files under AppData\LocalLow\Sad Owl Studios\Viewfinder. That path is from a wiki and a Steam thread, not from a support article.
| Where | Path | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Windows saves | %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Sad Owl Studios\Viewfinder\ | 2 sources |
| Windows config | HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Sad Owl Studios\Viewfinder\ | 1 source |
| Steam Play / Linux | <Steam library>/steamapps/compatdata/1382070/pfx/ | 2 sources |
| Epic cloud | — | not documented |
Copy the whole Viewfinder folder, both the .sav files and the .bak files, after the game is closed. Put that folder back in the same place before you launch again. There is no official backup tool in the sources. Steam Cloud and GOG Galaxy are listed as sync options on the PCGamingWiki snapshot. I do not claim those clouds move a save from Steam to PlayStation or Xbox. Epic’s cloud-save support is the empty row: nothing I could read documents it, so the cell stays blank instead of a guess.
The Windows path is the same whether you bought the game on Steam or Epic, according to the two write-ups. The Linux path is the Proton prefix for app 1382070, which only exists if you installed through Steam Play. A Deck install uses that prefix layout too. Deleting a slot from the in-game menu is a different action: patch 1.0.6 added a delete button on the save-slot screen, which removes a slot inside the game rather than exposing this folder. Keeping both the .sav and .bak files preserves the two file types documented by the community thread; no transfer-failure statistics are provided.
