Viewfinder Ending Explained

Spoilers from here. There is one documented story ending. Finish the last teleporter, pick up the seedling, and the simulation stops.

The sequence, from the IGN Chapter 5 write-up: in Level 4.9 you photograph the camera, place that photo behind you, take a self-portrait, enter the cage, and flip the lever. You say goodbye to Cait, use the teleporter, and come out in a red desert. One seedling is there. You pick it up. The dome opens. Jessie, who has been the voice outside the simulation, asks what you are holding. Wikipedia frames the meaning as a failed experiment and a thin hope that plants can come back. I keep that as the written reading, not as a creator interview. No developer commentary on the ending was in the sources I used.

Is there an alternate ending?

No written walkthrough, store page, or achievement list documents a second ending. The cited Chapter 5 walkthrough describes a linear exit with the seedling and does not present a branch. The flower that attracts a bee in Chapter 2 Level 2.3 is the achievement “I bee-t the game!”. People mix that up with an ending. It is a side gag in Hiraya.

The steps that lead into 4.9, including the five-minute countdown that starts at 4.1, are on the Chapter 5 page. Who Jessie, Cait, and Mirren are, without the last shot, is on the story page. I am not putting a spoiler image in the first screen. The screenshot below is a public store image of photo placement, not the desert.
